Bleeding aka medical blood letting was used by physicians for centuries up until the early 1900s.
This bleeding of patients was done wot rid them of toxins or humors that were out of balance.
A host of devices were used over the centuries to cause bleeding with leeches being the best known; however, numerous lancets, artificial leeches, and other strange devices were used as well.
