Note this tin would likely be part of what is called a “pannier” which is essentially a large container that would hold multiple “medicines” for Union Army use.

I put “medicines” in quotes above as the term “Spiritus Frumenti” in the 1800s (and up to prohibition era USA) meant grain alcohol, more specifically whiskey, for medicinal purposes.
