ANTIQUE CIRCA MID 1800S STONEWARE LEECH JAR BEARING ROYAL CREST AND MAKERS MARK – Antique Medical Instruments
[custom_post_title]
[lightslider_looper]

This is an ultra-rare leech jar dating to the mid 1800s with only three known to exist. None of the jars known to exist have lids with them although this jar had a lid a tone point. “LEECHES” is written on the jar’s front where a royal crest is present implying it held leeches of high value to the owner who may have been a prominent physician or surgeon or ran a fancy apothecary store. A maker’s mark is present on the rear of the jar but I have not researched the name of the maker which would provide further insight into the Leech Jar’s history. It measures approximately 9 inches tall and is in excellent condition without chips or cracks. Note the lovely ornate detailed handles and the diamond sized areas with holes which would have provided the leeches with air.
